Malta in pictures – The 8 best places to visit on the island
Hot Travel Tips
Malta is very small in size but it’s an action packed south Mediterranean island with plenty of things to see and do, from rich history and culture to impressive beaches and lagoons. Read on to find out the must-see places to visit during your stay.
1. Mdina Old City
If you visit Malta and don’t check out Mdina, did you even visit Malta? In our opinion, Mdina is the number one thing to see on the island. It’s a historic old city centre, surrounded by tall castle walls and impressive architecture. Get lost in the narrow city streets, assemble to the walls for amazing views or dine in an underground dungeon. Mdina will have you excited on first view of the city and we’d recommend visiting both day and night for a different experience.
2. The capital city of Valletta
Awarded European capital of culture in 2018, Valletta is Malta’s centre for culture and heritage. Spend a full day sightseeing in this historic city, visiting the impressive St John’s Cathedral, Fort St Elmo and Upper Barrakka Gardens. There are plenty of museums and photo opportunities for culture lovers, however you’ll also find plenty of nice restaurants and boutique shops to browse.
3. Marsaxlokk fishing village
A less known and quieter destination but a must-see for the excellent pictures you’ll capture, Marsaxlokk is a colourful fishing village to the south of the island. Capture panoramic pictures of the boats at the harbourside, browse the local market and enjoy the quieter lifestyle of this pretty little town.
4. Blue Lagoon on Comino Island
It may attract thousands of visitors every day to its small beach and lagoon, but Blue Lagoon on Comino island is a must-see regardless. Catch a boat trip from the seaside resort of Bugibba and enjoy a day relaxing on the rock face and beaches with a cocktail in hand, gazing out at the turquoise waters of the bay.
5. The island of Gozo
Gozo is a large island to the north of Malta and worth visiting for at least a few days. If you can only do a day-trip here, as many people do, ascend to the hilltop capital of Victoria for a combination of markets, quaint cafes, museums and the main-attraction of the island – The Citadel. This is where you’ll find the best views of the city and a walking tour is a must for learning about the history of the castle.
6. The nightlife centre of St Julian’s
St Julian’s ‘Paceville’ is the nightlife hub of the entire island. Packed with bars, clubs and casinos, this lively centre has a slightly classier vibe to other Mediterranean party resorts and attracts a range of ages, from teenagers to middle aged groups of friends. Don’t worry if you don’t like partying; St Julian’s is a stylish and upmarket place to visit for long walks by the marina and some of the best dining experiences in Malta. It also has a selection of quirky luxury hotels and a shopping mall.
7. The secluded beaches of the west – Golden Bay
Malta’s east coast is the most populated and lively area for both tourists and locals, however if you want to see a different side of the island, drive to the western beach of Golden Bay. This quiet but beautiful location has the best sunsets and some excellent walking paths. Relax in nature with your partner or join a group horse riding tour for a unique way to see the west coast.
10. Mellieħa and Popeye’s Village
Did you know that the 1980 film Popeye was filmed in Malta’s seaside resort of Mellieħa? The town from the film is still in action today and serves as a popular visitor’s attraction. Stop by all the key filming locations in this wacky seaside village, have fun taking pictures and dine at the themed eateries and snack bars. You can also go on a boat trip to tour the set from the sea. Mellieħa is also popular for its long sandy beaches so be sure to check those out!
