Churchill Flights GuideChurchill is a town on Hudson Bay in the far north of Manitoba, Canada. Churchill is located far from any other towns or cities but because of its isolation there are some unique sites and adventures to be experienced. It encompasses three ecologically diverse areas; marine, boreal forest and tundra. It is most famous for the many polar bears that move toward the shore from inland in the autumn; hence the nickname "Polar Bear Capital of the World". You can safely observe these amazing animals from modified vehicles called tundra buggies. The best time to experience this wonder is October and early November. Another incredible opportunity is the breathtaking sight of thousands of beluga whales. Churchill also has a rich history as one of the first settlements in Canada. See the Prince of Whales Fort and Eskimo Museum.
There is a Via rail passenger service from the capital city Winnipeg, Manitoba. There are also two airlines that flies from Winnipeg to Churchill Airport. There are no roads from Churchill that go to the rest of Canada.
Churchill has a subarctic climate with long very cold winters, and short, cool to mild summers that reach the mid teens (?). The best time to travel depends on what excites you the most and how cold you can stand it! With winters dropping below -30?, you need to be a snowbird. During the warmer months, you can watch the whales move into the warmer waters of the Churchill River estuary during July and August to calf. If you are a bird watcher then April and May are times when you can observe snowy owl, tundra swan, American golden plover and gyrfalcon plus more. Aurora Borealis, the most spectacular natural light show, can be experienced in this northern town! If you want to see the Northern Lights it is best not to go in the summer months.
