Vientiane Flights GuideOn the banks of the Mekong River, and bordering its neighbor Thailand, you'll find the stunning capital of Laos, Vientiane. Vientiane is the economic and cultural center of Laos, and has been through Laotian rule as well as Imperialist rule. It is the home of That Luang, a majestic Buddhist temple that draws thousands of visitors. That Luang may be imposing, but it is nowhere near the only important Buddhist symbol in this beautiful and pious capital.
Because Vientiane borders Thailand, a trip along the First or Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridges is easy and comprises a relatively painless journey between the two nations. Thanaleng Railway Station also connects the city to other major cities in the area, such as Nong Khai, Udon Thani and Khon Kaen. Wattay International Airport also offers flights to other Asian countries.
Vientiane is considered part of a tropical savanna, meaning that its weather is characterized by a wet season and a dry season. Temperatures remain predictably hot year-round, though the dry season tends to be slightly cooler than the wet season. The time between October and April is considered the height of the dry season and the best time for travel. For those interested in traveling along the Mekong river, water levels are highest between November and January, making it an ideal time for a river cruise.
